Rid of Odor With Tea Bags

November 9, 2013 by Marie 9 Comments

Rid odors with tea bags

If you are like me, and keep all your shoes in your closet, you may occasionally notice a slight shoe odor. I’m not talking extreme dirty sneaker odor, just a slight tinge of  “Hmm, I smell shoe”.  I don’t know about you, but I don’t want all my clean hanging clothes mingling any sort of tinge.   I heard about this easy tip to help freshen your closet.  TEA BAGS!

I went to the store and bought a multi-pack.   I don’t drink tea, but I knew that Chai tea contains cinnamon, cloves, and allspice and I thought in addition to deodorizing, it might add a slight pleasant scent.  I bought a 20 pack for $2.24 of Bigelow Vanilla Chai Tea.

I used 3 tea bags for my closet. I hung 2 on my closet rod spaced out, and one in my husbands gym shoes (strategic placement)! After a day or so I really did notice a difference in the overall smell of the closet.  The tea scent was very, very slight, and it was much more fresh smelling! I have had the tea bags hanging for just over a month and they now don’t really put of much of a scent at all and their fresh keeping super power is diminishing, so it might be time for round two. Even if they only last a month, and you use 3 bags, we’re looking at about $0.35 a month for keeping your clean clothes fresh and having a pleasant closet experience. Worth it? It is for me.  Give this a try and tell me what you think!

At that rate, you better start buying tea bags from Costco! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

I read that you can put small pieces of soap in a plastic bag with holes

Putting baking soda in a coffee filter works for a very long time and is cheaper

I have used white vinegar throughout the house especially in the kitchen when I fry fish. I place a small cap full in a hidden corner of the rooms and when you leave and come back in a while the house smells fresh. I like to do it when we leave on vacation. It is also good to place in corners of a house or apartment before moving in. To rid the former family’s scent that everyone has. My nephew needs a remedy for his shoes. I will share the tea bags with him. Thanks.

Put smelly gym shoes in a loose bag, stick in your freezer for 24 hrs or more, depending on how bad the smell, the freezer kills the bacteria that causes the odors. It works!
