DIY Spaghetti Sauce Seasoning Mix

February 11, 2015 by Becky 5 Comments

DIY Spaghetti Sauce Seasoning Mix

I love to make my own seasoning mixes. For one thing, they are way less expensive than the pre-packaged envelopes of seasoning you buy at the store. This DIY Spaghetti Sauce Mix is really easy to make and I usually have all of the ingredients in my spice cupboard. Plus, I know what goes into it! This recipe is simple, and it makes a delicious Spaghetti Sauce (and a quick meal!) Around our house, we love just about any kind of pasta. In fact, my husband could eat a bowl of spaghetti with meat sauce for just about any meal. Even breakfast!

You can add ground beef or Italian sausage and make this into a hearty meat sauce if you want to.

Here’s what goes into the DIY Spaghetti Sauce dry seasoning mix:

1 beef boullion cube, crushed (or 1 teaspoon beef boullion granules)

2 teaspoons cornstarch

1 teaspoon sugar

½ teaspoon dried thyme

½ teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon dried basil

½ teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon garlic powder

dash of black pepper

Use right away or label and store in an airtight container or zipper seal bag for up to 2 months.

To make a hearty meat sauce, brown 1 pound of ground beef or Italian Sausage in a Non-Stick Skillet. Drain fat. Add the dry seasoning mix. If needed, add salt to taste.

Then add:

1 large can crushed tomatoes

1 – 8 oz. can tomato sauce

1/2 cup hot water

Stir well and simmer uncovered about 20 minutes. (And by the way, your house will smell amazing!)  I like use a Splatter Screen Cover to put on top of my pot while the sauce simmers. It allows the steam to escape (as if it were uncovered) and allows the sauce to thicken. Plus, it helps to keep the sauce from splattering all over my stove top!

To make this a meatless sauce, just omit the ground beef. Simmer the seasoning mix, the 1/2 cup water, the tomatoes and tomato sauce for 20 minutes.

Serve over hot pasta with some Twisted Breadsticks and a big green salad!

My husband actually likes homemade pizza made with this sauce! HERE is our recipe for Mama’s Best Pizza Dough. It makes amazing pizza!

What size of the crushed tomatoes do you use? I see it says large, but I’m wondering how many ounces.

Great seasoning mix! Will def continue to use these spices for my spaghetti. I’m also curious on the oz for the crushed tomatoes. I used a 14.5 oz petite diced tomatos, while the dish was delicious it wasn’t quite saucy enough.

Omit corn starch for a thinner sauce.

Diced tomatoes are more firm than crushed
