Valentine’s Sugar Cookies

Valentine's Sugar Cookies - cute idea and great recipe! These deli containers work perfectly as packaging for a gift!

Years ago, a group of us girls decided to have a “bake sale” just before Valentine’s Day. It was not a typical bake sale where you sit behind a table selling home-baked goods. We took orders ahead of time for gorgeous, hand-decorated Valentine’s Heart Cookies. We sold them by the dozen or half dozen.

Since there were so many cookies that were ordered, and several of us were going to be baking them, we decided it would be best to use one uniform cookie cutter and the same Sugar Cookie dough recipe for all of them.

My friend’s mom shared this family recipe with us, and I have to tell you…after I made this sugar cookie recipe for the Heart-Shaped Valentine’s  Cookies, I have never wanted to try any other! They are light, delicate and soft. When you bite into one, it literally tastes as lovely as Valentine’s Day!

Here’s how to make the delicious soft Valentine’s sugar cookies. Cream together:

1 ½ c. powdered sugar (yes, powdered sugar. No, that’s not a typo!)

1 stick margarine, softened

1 stick butter, softened

1 egg

1 t. vanilla

½ t. almond flavoring

Mix in the following, just until a soft dough forms (do not over mix or dough will become tough):

3 level cups flour

1 t. baking soda

1 t. cream of tartar

Chill dough for at least 30 minutes.

Sprinkle flour over counter top. Roll out the dough about 1/4″ – 3/8″ thick.

Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut out the cookies.  (If you are going to package them as in the photo, make sure the hearts will be small enough to fit inside the container.)

Place the cookies at least 1” apart on a parchment lined baking sheet.  Bake 10 minutes at 350°.  Be careful not to not over bake. Cookies should not get brown – not even on the edges!  Let the cookies cool on the pan for 2 minutes.

Then remove to a wire rack and allow to cool completely before frosting.

The ready-made pink cherry flavored frosting is really good on these! Or, if using your own buttercream or white frosting, add almond flavoring and some pink food coloring.

Here’s a fun idea for packaging these tasty cookies! I bought these little 8 oz. deli containers with lids
for around 20 cents a piece from my local deli. They can also be found on Amazon.com. These are the smallest, clear containers (usually used to sell small orders of macaroni or potato salad!) Cut out a circle of cute scrapbook paper a little bit smaller than the inside of the lid. Then add a Mini Heart Doily on top of the pretty paper. Place your pretty, decorated cookie onto the doily and finally, press on the container over the cookie (like a little dome!)

These are such a fun little package to give to friends for Valentine’s Day! Aren’t they cute?
