The Cheapest Way To Update A Kitchencheapest way to renovate a kitchen

We just bought an older home and found the cheapest way to update a kitchen. I want to share this with you all because I am sure that I’m not the only project-aholic on a budget.  While we were students renting apartments, I  dreamed about owning my own home so that I could decorate it and remodel it as I pleased. Now that we finally bought our first home, we have spent a lot of our savings getting into it. Needless to say, extravagant remodels are not an option right now. Because my long awaited renovation projects now have a limited budget, I had to find the absolute cheapest way to update a kitchen. Here is what I did to give my kitchen a makeover on a budget.

The featured image above shows the “before” picture from the MLS listing before we bought it.

Below, you will see what a splash of paint, new hardware, removed TV hardware, and a new faucet did to update it once we moved in.

Here are the four main projects that I did to get the cheapest way to update a kitchen.

I will eventually redo the backsplash when I find the supplies for cheap.  My idea is to do a galvanized steel backsplash so that the entire thing can be a big magnet board. Anyone know where to get cheap steel?

I think the most impressive kitchen renovation was the Instant Granite. If you have never seen this, here are some pictures of the process.

It is basically a vinyl wrap. It looks pretty dang good for being a sticker! It took my husband and I about 4 hours to do with 2 kids and a dog running around. It was pretty easy for the most part, the hardest part about it was figuring out how to get the bubbles out. Here is a video to show you the technique for minimal bubbles.

What do you think? Can you tell that it is #instantgranite not real granite?

Do you have any ideas to add to the cheapest way to update a kitchen?

  1. I’d never heard of instant granite. I think the idea is awesome, especially if you’re looking to save some money. I’m curious to how it holds up to prolonged use, especially if the base layer is beat up a little bit, but it definitely looks good. Thanks for sharing the idea!

    1. So far it is holding up well at three months. We have babied it, with no heat and no cutting. I am sure it wont be a forever fix but if it can buy a few years, I will be pleased. If the surface is rough, you will want to get it totally smooth before applying. Send pics if you try it!

      1. I am curious how it is holding up after a year or so. I am thinking of using this but am worried about it tearing if move or pull a coffee maker or kitchen aid mixer across it. Thanks.

        1. I am SO impressed with how it has held up. We say it all the time. We have only had two ‘flaws” so far but they are hardly noticeable. I thought that this would be a temporary fix until we decided to do real granite. Here I am two years later and it is still in good condition. It has allowed us to put the upgrade money into other areas of the house. The key to our success is that we never put heat on it, never cut on it and if there is something questionable, you can just stick it on a cutting board. This has been a great fix for us, we keep wondering when it will be time to do real counters.

  2. How were you able to get the instant granite? We have been wanting to try and noticed on that website it said to contact them for free samples but I can’t find any contact information.
