Remove Permanent Marker From Leather Furniture

Today I had my first experience with toddlers and Sharpie Markers. Oh boy. Watch this video tutorial  that I created to show you how to get permanent marker marks off of leather surfaces in case you ever find yourself in the same boat.

I tried several things, but what worked was products with denatured alcohol as the first ingredient. Examples include:

  1. Aerosol Hairspray
  2. Victorias Secret Body Spray or
  3. Isopropyl Alcohol

With a saturated cotton ball, rub on some test patches in a discrete area to test how it reacts with your leather finish. The above three had no affects on my leather. Then with the same cotton ball, rub the marks in circular motion until removed. It was so quick and easy and I am so glad my chair is saved!

Have you ever had to do this? Have you had any funny marker experiences with toddlers?

  1. I want to thank you personally for all your postings. You have saved me so much money along with my time, YOU ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

  2. I have not tried this on leather, but Purell works on Sharpie. I’ve used it to get it off hands, nail polished nails and my counter top.

  3. My funny toddler with a permanent marker story:
Trying to get ready for church one Sunday. We had a 3 yr old son, 2 yr old daughter, and a 1 yr old son…
things suddenly got too quiet. I went to check on the kids and my oldest son says “Mommy, mommy Look! Sissy’s a ZEBRA!!”
He had drawn lines ALL OVER HER FACE, NECK AND EVEN BURROWED DEEP INTO HER EARS!! Black permanent marker, all over her face. She was grinning, and so proud of herself, and he was very proud, too! I had to use rubbing alcohol, and tons and tons of cotton balls to remove it. It took several days to get all of it…needless to say, we did NOT make it to church that day!
