How to Get Picky Kids to Eat

2 tricks to get your picky kids to eat food

As a mom, I have learned a technique (trickery) to get my kids to eat dinner.  One child in particular, asked if he could be exempt from dinner every night.  He loves cereal.  And I rarely let them eat cereal for dinner, unless it has been one of “those” days.  So my picky eater needs a little nudge to get him to eat food other than cereal.  I have found that if kids help to make dinner, they are less likely to complain about it.  Also if you name the dinner something cool to them, they will be more likely to eat it.  Let me give you an example:

I was asked by Tyson® to share a recipe with you all.  So I went to Sam’s Club to grab some Tyson® Chicken Nuggets.  Love these things.  So fast and easy and I know my kids are getting protein and natural ingredients.  (These nuggets are just as easy as cereal when you are having one of “those” days).  My picky child likes to wrap things in croissant dough.  We had never wrapped a chicken nugget, so we were excited to try.  Let the kids wrap the nuggets.  I know you will want to try to make them all uniform and pretty, but they will be proud of their nuggets and be more likely to eat dinner.  Also please let your child bang the canister of croissant dough against the edge of the table.  They will be happy about the small explosion of dough.

Next trick is to name the food something cool.  We haven’t seen the new Peanuts Movie, but we are pretty excited about going.  My kids recently watched some of the classic Peanuts shows on tv and loved them.  Hopefully this weekend we will get to the theater.  Peanuts Movie Tyson® is an official partner with the new Peanuts Movie…so it makes sense to name these after characters in the new movie.  Just add any character from the movie to the name of the food.  Sounds silly, but it works.

It worked!  My kids actually enjoyed dinner tonight.  Fast and easy!

  1. Take the Surprise Out of New Foods

It takes a lot of courage to put something into your mouth when you know absolutely nothing about it, and the information most parents give their kids—“yum, this is good”—just doesn’t cut it. Being able to make predictions is key to trying new foods. Practice telling your children as much as you can about whatever food you want them to taste. “This is crunchy like the chicken nuggets you like.” “This is sweet, almost like a cookie.” Then, instead of asking your children if they like what they’ve tasted, ask them to describe something about the food.
