Why is a Warm Creamy Crab Dip a Crowd Pleaser? Here Are Three Reasons:

  1.     Irresistible Flavor Combination: The blend of imitation crab and cream cheese creates a rich, savory flavor that is both comforting and delectable. The sweetness of the crab pairs perfectly with the creamy texture, making each bite a delightful experience.
  2.     Versatility in Serving: This dip can be paired with a variety of dipping options, from fresh veggies to crispy bread cubes. You may even have your own ideas for dunking. Perhaps you could try pretzels, crackers or even corn chips. This versatility allows guests to mix and match, finding their perfect combination and keeping everyone satisfied.
  3.     Visual Appeal: Presented in a warm, baked bread bowl, this dip not only tastes amazing but also looks impressive. The golden crust and the creamy center create a visually appealing dish that adds an elegant touch to any gathering.  Choose as many colorful dippers as you can for a visual feast as well as a culinary one.

Recipe for Crab Party Dip:

Ingredients:

  •         1 Round loaf of crusty bread—sometimes call Artisan bread or Sheepherders bread
  •         2 packages (8 ounces each) Cream cheese—at room temperature
  •         ¼ C. Milk
  •         2 T. Grated onion
  •         2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  •         2 tsp. fresh lemon juice—re-concentrated, bottled lemon juice may also be used
  •         ½ lb. Flaky imitation crab meat—I haven’t tried it, but I believe that real crab meat could also work well.
  •         Salt, to taste
  •         Black pepper, to taste
  •         Hot pepper sauce, to taste
  •         2 T. Parsley—fresh is much prettier, but dried could be used in a pinch
  •         Assorted raw vegetables such as miniature carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, red and green pepper slices, cherry tomatoes and pea pods.

Instructions:

Preheat Oven and Prepare the Bread loaf:

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.

Cut a slice off the top of the bread.  Reserve this slice.

Next, hollow out the loaf. I love using a grapefruit spoon to help pull the soft bread away from the sides of the crust. You should have a shell about two-inches thick.  Reserve the hollowed-out bread and cut it into cubes. Set aside while you prepare the dip.

Prepare the Creamy Dip:

Beat the cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Slowly beat in the milk, grated onion, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice. Fold in the imitation crab.  Next season with the hot pepper sauce, salt and pepper to taste.  Spoon the crab mixture into the prepared bread shell.

Baking:

Cover the bread shell with the reserved bread top. Wrap the entire bread loaf in tin foil and place on a baking sheet. Bake in the pre-heated 250-degree oven for about three hours for the flavors to blend and the mixture to get piping hot.

Serving:

Remove from the oven and carefully remove the bread slice on top. Sprinkle with the parsley. Serve on a large platter surrounded by the bread cubes and the vegetables, or other dippers to be dunked in the cheese mixture.

Baking tips:

I suggest using miniature carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, red and green pepper slices, cherry tomatoes and pea pods for your dipping vegetables.

Crackers and pretzels would also make delicious dippers.

When the bread shell is empty it can be cut or torn apart and eaten too.

If you have any dip leftover, which is unlikely, you can rewrap the loaf in tin foil and store in the refrigerator overnight.  Just reheat it in the oven the following day. I do not recommend warming it in the microwave.  This will cause the bread to become soggy.
